It’s rumored that there are 5 unreleased versions of this track in bootleg circulation, supposedly edited down from the original conception of a 14 minute opus. The outtake I’m posting today clocks in at just over 12 minutes, complete with the 2nd verse and the coveted “Hallway Speech” neither of which were included in album.
I won’t attempt to interpret the meaning of the song as Prince was definitely in rare form when creating what many hardcore Prince Fam refer to as “a musical masterpiece”.
The lyrics are, in a word: Spellbinding.
I dare not delve deeper into the labyrinth of Prince’s psyche here, as face value is enough to render this piece a jewel amongst the vast treasure which is Prince’s vault.
As for the basis of “Father’s Song”…
Obviously written by Prince (in its totality), the album/soundtrack composition credit for this track was given to his father; John L. Nelson for the chord sequence based upon an untitled piano piece he had written. Prince recorded the piece on piano and a glimpse of it actually made it to the movie, during the scene as being played by the actor portraying his father, Clarence Williams III.
I’ve discovered (2) short versions of this composition which Prince appropriately entitled “Father’s Song”. My hope is that Prince will one day further explore this melody and release it in the memory of the late Mr. Nelson.
*As with most outtakes, the tracks are not fully mastered and as a result, the dubbing is less than perfect. The music itself however remains without blemish.
I hope you’ll enjoy this post at 2tha9s.com and share with your Purple Fam with both-
